Teachers – Mighty Mamas with Little & Mighty

Happy Monday, sweet friends!  While this rainy day finds me cooped inside, with children bouncing off of the walls, Mighty Mamas with Little & Mighty has been a little ray of sunshine in my day.

In fact, this week’s discussion might just be my favorite one yet!

When I first felt my son kicking about in my belly seven years ago, (yes, I am still processing how SEVEN years have passed!) I imagined all of the things I might teach him.

I would teach him compassion and empathy.

We would journey out on adventures exploring this beautiful earth and feeling the sun shine down upon us.

I spent many days behind the wheel of my car listening to the song “With My Own Two Hands” by Ben Harper, tears rolling down my cheeks, awestruck by the thought that soon I would bring a new pair of hands into this world; hands that could serve, love, and even change the world.

What an incredible gift, and an immense responsibility.

Are you familar with the song? It is one of our favorites, one that I have sung to each of my children in the stillness of the night, waiting for sleep to come, hopefully anticipating the life that each of them might live.

I can change the world, with my own two hands;

Make it a better place, with my own two hands;

Make it a kinder place, with my own two hands;

With my own, with my own two hands.

I can make peace on earth, with my own two hands;

I can clean up the earth, with my own two hands;

I can reach out to you, with my own two hands;

With my own two hands.”

To this day, when I hear the song, or sing it to my children, I find myself crying. I cry for their open minds, for their tender hearts, for their genuine curiosity.

But above all, I am overcome by the thought that each of us entered this world with a purpose, and with capable hands with which to fulfill our work.

Isn’t that just amazing?

Yet, what I have learned, and what has proven to be most amazing, is that the work that we were sent here to fulfill begins the moment we are born. (Remember, little things can do big things!) image

I always knew that I would work to teach my children all that I could in my time with them. What I did not anticipate, however, is all that they would teach me.

I suppose one of the greatest gifts of parenting is not the lessons we teach our children, but the lessons we, in turn, learn along the way.

This is exactly what we Mighty Mamas are discussing today. I was delighted to read all that our children have taught us, and was struck by the commonality of the lessons we have learned.

I do hope you’ll come join us over at Little & Mighty to read about what my children have taught me and to share in the discussion!

PS. If you would like to listen to our favorite song with your children and discuss all the ways they can use their hands, hearts and minds to help the world, you can check it out here.

  1. I’m sitting here with tears streaming down my face as I listen to this song for about the 12th time. I love you so girl. You say all the right things at just the right time. The gift and responsibility of parenthood is something that is constantly on my mind. I created life and I love them so much it hurts, but it’s also so anxiety provoking thinking about molding them into decent humans and setting them free is this big scary world. There’s that whole motherhood is bipolar for ya. Which btw I have a blog brewing about! I also have a guest post for Little & Mighty publishing soon about the lessons I hope to teach my littles and this made me even more excited about it! Thank you for your beautiful soul and for always sharing a part of your heart I need to read 🙂

    1. Motherhood definitely is all over the place. I sometimes cannot even comprehend how I have felt such a wide range of emotions in a day — sometimes in just an hour!! I cannot wait to read your guest post with Little & Mighty. I have a feeling that many of the lessons you hope to impart on your little fuegos will be things I am trying my best at, too… (One of the many reasons I am SO glad to know you!) Thank you for always making me feel as though this blogging business is meaningful. You push me to keep going!

  2. Tears. I know I cry at everything these days (prego hormones,) but I too often think about how time flies and how much my baby girl has taught me in the less than two years that she’s been here. I can’t wait to check out Little and Mighty!! Thank you!! xo

    1. Oh, Jody, I know!! And those hormones are still coursing through me, though my baby girl is almost five months old. (Just that thought alone makes me cry!) Thank you for stopping by. Wishing you all the best as you transition into a mama to two.
